"The Yosemite Valley from the Mariposa Trail": Albumen print from a mammoth-plate collodion-on-glass negative
Carleton E. WATKINS (1829-1916)
The Yosemite Valley from the Mariposa Trail (The Best General View)

Albumen print, contemporary, from a mammoth-plate collodion-on-glass negative, ca. 1865. Image 16-1/4 x 20-1/2 in. on a period mount 19-1/2 x 25-1/2 in.
Titled: "No. 1 The Yosemite Valley from the Mariposa Trail" in pencil, on the verso, in the artist's hand.

Watkins's view of Yosemite was positioned (with a considerable assist from his six-mule train) to place the Falls in lower center and align the near, middle and far ridgelines, the astonishing perpendicular of the tree slicing the foreground curtain to open the vastness of the panorama.
