[CHAUCER, Geoffrey]
The Romaunt of the Rose
Rendered out of the French into English by Geoffrey Chaucer and illustrated
by Keith Henderson & Norman Wilkinson of Four Oaks.
London: Chatto & Windus, 1911.
First trade edition (after the 1908 limited edition of 500 copies). Octavo
(10-1/4 x 8 in.). Collates 140 pp.: [4], vi, 1-108, [2]; plus 20 ff. plates
with guards. Pink-gold textured Asahi cloth over boards, gilt lettering
on spine, top edges gilt, others uncut. Uncut edges slightly browned, small
stains on bottom edges of some pages, a very good copy overall. Twenty color
plates tipped onto hand-made paper with blind impressed panels and tissue
guards with printed titles, the frontispiece and nine others by Keith Henderson
and ten by Norman Wilkinson. Printed in double columns in Chaucer's medieval
English (from the Globe edition) at the Ballantyne Press on laid paper.
While this copy is from the "trade" edition, it remains relatively
scarce, and the exquisite Henderson and Wilkinson plates are identical with
those in the 1908 limited edition.
