Small broadsheet (2 ll. folio, overall 26.5 x 21.5 cm), uncut. Collates 4 pp. printed on laid paper. Fine, bright and crisp without any defects.
This primary resource in Napoleonic history includes Bonaparte’s
announcement, by way of an extraordinary envoy sent from Milan, of the preliminaries
that led to the Treaty of Campo Formio in October, 1797. An example of the
Napoleonic propaganda apparatus beginning and ending with military news
having a patriotic ring, the broadsheet publishes a “credible”
copy, described as circulating in Italy, of the Treaty of Milan signed 27
floréal, an V (May 16, 1797) ending the war of Venice, and the secret
articles of the Treaty ceding Milan to Austria. The broadsheet also reports
current news dated 23 thermidor (August 10) of the peace negotiated with
Portugal, the arrival of letters dated 12 thermidor (July 30) announcing
the liberation of Rome, and an account of the status of the negotiation
between Malmesbury’s envoy and the French legation in Lille.
