Sternfeld, following a tradition tracing back to Timothy O'Sullivan and William
Henry Jackson, chronicles man's place in the American landscape. This iconic
image, published in his first book,
American Prospects, juxtaposes
the foredrop of the rustic farm market, depicting "a simple truth of
place," against the ironic orange flames erupting from the house roof,
which somehow make social comment on the broken orange pumpkins.
