Drawing in charcoal, circa 1968. Signed and inscribed lower right recto, “Tullah & Ed / Hanley / Adam Farkas.” Faint outline drawing of a Portrait bust in charcoal, verso. On thin ivory Ingres laid paper with full margins, sheet 64.8 x 44.3 cm (25-1/2 x 17-1/2 in.). Fine condition.
Professor Farkas, rector of the Hungary University of Fine Arts in Budapest during 2002-5 and head of a teaching sculpture studio there, sold this drawing directly to Tullah Hanley in 1968, during his early Paris period when he states that he was influenced by Henry Moore and Brancusi. The strong sculptural presence of the drawing suggests comparison with Lachaise as well (e.g., Dos de femme qui marche, bronze, 1924). Indeed, if the outlined beginning of a portrait bust on the verso has any connection with Tullah Hanley herself (who was once a professional artist’s model), the Lachaise resemblance of the standing nude model may be no coincidence, as Lachaise’s iconic Woman (Elevation) (LF 55, the plaster 1912-5) is represented in reduced form by the Buste de femme, bronze ca. 1920 (LF 173), in the Hanley Collection.
