Evans’ architectural photograph emphasizes the interplay of light and shadow on carved stone. The organic warmth of the sunlight brings new life and expression to the man-made carvings and a deeper consideration of the connection between art and the natural world. The human endeavor of the medieval organ screen figures is illuminated and transformed by the caress of the Divine embodied in nature.
Evans’ working techniques, too, reflect this union of human and divine.
After painstakingly framing his space, Evans would wait, often for days,
until the sunlight hit exactly at the angle he required. Persistence and
patience culminated in the unpredictable moment when the light, finally,
was perfect, touching each angle and highlight exactly as he intended. The
soft richness of his direct contact platinum print, from the unmanipulated
negative, contrasts the depth and texture of the sculpture and the glorious
richness of the light.
