Press. Quarter brown niger morocco, spine with gilt decoration of initials
in oval and gilt edge banding, over red, black and white Cockerell combed
pattern marbled covers, top edges rough trimmed, gilt and stained red, others
uncut. Collates [1 l.], 1 l. (half-title), 1 l. (frontispiece), 1 l. (title
in red and black), 1 l. (dedication), pp. vii-xvi (contents, illustration
list, preface, ‘bio-bibliographical statement”), 1 l. (fly-title),

Seven selections from the manuscript notebooks left by Butler, including
“Bossiana” flavored with “sweet morsels” of Mrs
Boss, with Preface, Bio-Bibliographical Statement and Notes by A.T. Bartholomew,
who succeeded Butler’s intimate friend Henry Festing Jones (to whom
this book is dedicated) as Butler’s literary executor and keeper of
the Samuel Butler Collection at St John’s College, Cambridge.
